Spirit of Adventure
ACMI, 16 - 23 Sep, 2015 Opening 16 Sept “What time then for fantasy, dreamers and poets?” - The Outrageous Baron Munchausen In answer to this question, CaSFFA heeds the call to adventure with a multifaceted exhibition celebrating both the 2015 festival theme Projection and the wondrous animation, visionary special effects and otherworldly themes of legendary Czech animator Karel Zeman, with film and object-based works that favour imagination over the rational and the suspension of disbelief over reality. For the duration of the festival visitors are invited to carve a trail through possible worlds populated by enchanted landscapes, fantastical visions and altogether unbelievable things. Artist Statement Living on the newly discovered flat earth is becoming increasingly hazardous as more and more mythological creatures become common place. Kraken in the ocean, Big Foot on the land, Loch Ness in the lakes and Air Whales filling the sky above. Somewhere along the way science stopped working, what was round became flat, what was myth became real. Our leaders took onions in their hands and bit into them like they were juicy apples. They erased modern science from our world, pulling down the wind turbines and flooding the world with fossil fuels. Dystopia as dreamed of by the few and inflicted on the many. New slogans appeared: "Coal is good for humanity and renewable energy is a blight". |
